Associates are evaluated on an annual basis by those shareholders with whom they have worked. Respective shareholders provide written evaluations, and each associate completes a pre-review questionnaire. The review meeting is conducted by the associate’s supervising shareholder and a member of the firm’s management committee.

Law clerks typically work full time hours during the summer months and part time hours during the school year.
Scope of the Position
Our law clerks are often involved early in the beginning of substantive legal matters and acquire valuable experience as active participants in:
- Case investigations
- Legal research
- Drafting of legal memoranda or briefs
- Discovery techniques and responses
- Preparation of contracts and other binding legal documentation
Law Clerks are frequently invited by members of the firm to attend:
- Client meetings
Our law clerks also actively participate in case evaluations and case reviews.
“As a law clerk at HKM, my experience has exposed me to nearly all elements of working in a law firm. Some of the highlights to date include:
- Drafting Daubert and Summary Judgment motions in a case that ultimately settled at a settlement conference, which I attended.
- Spending more than a month performing document review at a client’s corporate office, working alongside the client to prepare for a major document production.
- Assisting the products liability group prepare for and try a month-long trial. I helped prepare arguments regarding evidentiary issues and reconciled expert deposition testimony with what the judge admitted in trial. I drafted post-trial motions including a motion to reconsider damages interest calculations.
I truly enjoy working in a firm where I do not feel stratification among the employees. I work closely with partners just as much as I do the secretaries and paralegals. I feel welcome here and continue to seek out projects from the various groups to ensure I can make an educated decision about what type of work I hope to do.
